What we store on your device

A short list, and the only optional one belongs to somebody else. None of them are for advertising, none of them follow you to other websites, and we sell nothing to anybody. This page names every cookie we set, what it is for and how long it lasts.

Two different rules

Cookies that are needed to make the site work at all, and our own visitor counting, sit under one rule. Google Analytics sits under another, and we treat them differently on purpose.

Our own counting is on, and you can switch it off

We count visits ourselves, using the rj_session cookie above. It is first-party, its only purpose is measuring how the site is used so we can improve it, and the results are shared with nobody. That is the statistical exception the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 added to the cookie rules, and it asks for a free and simple way to object rather than for permission in advance.

So it is on unless you say otherwise, and objecting really does stop it: we stop recording, and we delete the cookie rather than merely ignoring it.

Google Analytics is off until you say yes

Google reserves rights to use analytics data for its own purposes, so it is not simply helping us count — which means the exception above does not cover it and your consent is needed first. Until you give it, nothing loads: no script, no request to Google, not even a signal saying you declined.

If you accept, Google sets its own cookies — _ga and _ga_R40DW4VYWR, each lasting about two years — and the visit is recorded on Google servers, which are outside the UK. You can withdraw consent at any time and they stop being set.

Changing your mind

There is a link in the footer of every page on this site. It reopens the banner with your current choices in it, and you can change them as often as you like. Nothing is remembered about a choice except the choice itself.

Your browser can also block or delete cookies for this site, and every browser has a setting for it. If you delete rj_consent we will ask again, because we will no longer know what you decided.
